Exploring the World of 3D RPG Maker Games

I haven't touched RPG Maker in a long time, until finally I saw an ad for RPG Maker Unite on Steam, and my curiosity was piqued. 'Didn't MZ just release?' I thought to myself. The new game caught my attention not only because it's been some time since I last used the engine but also due to its unique features.

The first thing that stood out to me was the sprite formatting. The screenshot showed a very different type of character set, and the tileset tab revealed many more tiles, possibly even divided into half-tiles – a feature that excites me greatly. I have a feeling that all the asset guidelines will be extremely different in RPG Maker Unite.

One possible reason for this is that RPG Maker Unite might not be an engine per se but rather a plugin. This has both advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, it could mean less restrictions on using new packs, which would be a welcome change. On the other hand, it also means that cross-use with the hundreds of styles and assets created for all other KADOKAWA engines might become unusable.

In my opinion, there's no real way to enforce users to only use assets in RPG Maker projects if the only thing that classifies an Unity project as an RPG Maker Unite project is having a plugin installed. This raises questions about the potential impact on users who have invested time and effort into creating content for previous KADOKAWA engines.

RPG Maker Unite's unique status as not being a traditional RPG Maker in the literal sense also leaves me wondering if this will change the licensing terms, particularly since Gotcha Gotcha Games is involved. However, it's unlikely that they could retroactively change the license even if they wanted to.

In conclusion, while I'm excited about the possibilities offered by RPG Maker Unite, I'm also concerned about the potential implications for users who have invested in previous KADOKAWA engines. As we continue to learn more about this new game, it will be interesting to see how the community responds and adapts to its features and limitations.
